RodDunbar,ProfessorofMauriceWilkinsCentre,Auckland,NewZealandProfessorRodDunbarholdsbothamedicaldegree(MBChB)andaPhDfromtheUniversityofOtagoinNewZealandHespent6yearsasapost-doctoralresearchfellowinhumanimmunologyattheUniversityofOxford,beforereturningtoNewZealandin2002underaWellcomeTrustInternationalSeniorResearchFellowshipIn2008hewasappointedtheDirectoroftheMauriceWilkinsCentre,anationalCentreofResearchExcellencethatpromotesamulti-disciplinaryapproachtothediscoveryofnewmedicinesandvaccinesSince2009hehasalsoco-directedaprogrammewithintheUniversityofAucklandtoaccelerateitsresearchrelatedtohumantherapeutics(theBiopharmaThematicResearchInitiative)Rod'slabhasaprimaryfocusonhumancellularimmunology,especiallyunderstandinghowTcellresponsestotumoursariseandhowtheseTcellresponsescanbestimulatedincancertherapyThelabhasparticularexpertiseintheuseofflowcytometryandimmunofluorescencemicroscopytostudyTcellsandantigen-presentingcellsinhumantissues,andinanalysingthefunctionofthesecellsinprimarycellculturemodelsThesetechniquesarealsoemployedbythelabtocharacterisemesenchymalstemcellsinhumantissues,andexaminetheirroleinhumandiseaseandtheirpotentialincelltherapyandtissueengineeringRod'slabinteractswithawidecollaborativenetworkwithparticularstrengthsinorganicandmedicinalchemistry,tissueimaging,andcomputermodelling
