CanadaResearchChairinNeurocognitionofLanguage，McGillUniversity,Canada，AssociateProfessorEvent-relatedbrainpotentials(ERPs)provideanexcellenttooltoinvestigatethetemporaldynamicsoflanguageprocessing,includingthefascinatingneuralchangesthattakeplacewhenlanguagelearnersbecomemoreproficientintheirL2Inmytalk,Iwillpresentdatafromavarietyoflarge-scaleERPstudiesinvestigatingsecondlanguageacquisitioninbothartificiallanguagesandnaturallanguages,atdifferentlevelsofL2proficiencyIwillarguethatthereislittleevidenceforastrict‘criticalperiod’inthedomainoflateacquiredL2morpho-syntaxandthatL2proficiencyratherthanageoflanguageacquisitionpredictsthebrain'sactivationpatterns,including"native-like"activityatveryhighlevelsofproficiencyThegeneraldynamicsofthesechanges,however,ismodulatedbyfactorssuchasone'sfirstlanguagebackground(eg,‘transfereffects’)andthetypeoflanguageexposure(eg,immersionversusclassroominstruction)Iftimeallows,IwillalsopresentthefirstERPdatademonstratinghowlong-termimmersioninL2canaffectthereal-timeprocessingofone‘sfirstlanguage
