TherecentresearchinterestsofProfessorBansilhavefocusedonquestionsconcerningtheelectronicstructureandspectroscopyofhigh-Tcsuperconductors,topologicalinsulators,nanosystems,andothercomplexmaterialsProfessorBansil’sgrouphasdevelopedandimplementedthetheoreticalmethodologyforcarryingoutfirst-principlescalculationsofspectralintensitiesrelevantforangle-resolvedphotoemission,scanningtunnelingmicroscopy/spectroscopy,inelasticx-rayscattering,magneticandnon-magneticComptonscattering,positron-annihilationangularcorrelation,amongotherspectroscopiesinsystemsofthecomplexityofthehigh-Tc’sTheoreticalapproachesbasedonthelocal-densityapproximationaswellastechniquesforgoingbeyondthisframeworktoincorporateeffectssuchasstrongelectroncorrelations,superconductivityandphononshavebeendevelopedtoobtaincomprehensivespectroscopicmodelingschemesWearealsoconsideringhoweffectsofsubstitutionsanddopantsontheelectronicstatescanbetreatedrealisticallyinwideclassesofmaterialsTheseinvestigationshaveyielded,forexample,importantnewinsightsintotheexistenceofFermisurfaces,thenatureofelectronicstatesneartheFermienergy,aswellasthemechanismofsuperconductivityinthehigh-Tc’sWehaverecentlypredictedsuccessfullyanumberofnewtopologicalinsulatormaterialsthroughfirst-principlesmodelingProfessorBansil’sresearcheffortinvolvesextensivecollaborationswithgroupswithinandoutsidetheUnitedStates
